Silver sulfadiazine is a topical antibiotic cream primarily used to prevent and treat infections in patients with second-degree and third-degree burns. It works by killing or stopping the growth of various bacteria and yeast that can infect open burn wounds, thereby reducing the risk of the infection spreading to surrounding skin or into the bloodstream (sepsis). Burn Wound Care: It is standard for managing serious burns to keep the area sterile and promote healing. Infected Skin Ulcers: It is often used off-label for treating infected leg ulcers and pressure sores (bedsores). Minor Skin Injuries: It can be used as an antiseptic for minor cuts, abrasions, and surgical incisions to prevent bacterial contamination. Sunburns: In some cases, it may be prescribed for severe sun burns.
